Low-value care can go unnoticed as a contributor to all the demands on your time and the healthcare system.

So Choosing Wisely Canada has a dedicated web page with resources to help you reflect on your practice and reduce low-value care to ease the burden:

• The Time Needed to Treat (TNT) Calculator provides a personalized estimate of time spent on low-value care based on your practice and habits.
• Three examples of TNT estimates demonstrate how using Choosing Wisely Canada’s recommendations can reduce physician workload around routine blood tests, bone density scans, and lower back pain imaging.

Family physician Dr. René Wittmer created the TNT Calculator to help clinicians estimate the amount of time lost to low-value care and encourage reflection on where unnecessary interventions could be reduced.

“There are many things that we do for no reason,” explains Dr. Wittmer. “Cutting back on things that don’t offer any advantages to patients allows clinicians to reallocate that time to things that will help patients feel better, live longer, and that really make a difference.”
