Lung cancer screening program: Expanded referral options

Oct 7, 2025

The Alberta Lung Cancer Screening Program (ALCSP) has new funding that will allow it to continue enrolling eligible patients.

You and your patients now have expanded options for referrals with this support.

To be eligible for referral, patients must:

  • Be between 50 and 74 years of age
  • Currently smoke or be a former smoker with a significant history (e.g., one pack per day for at least 15 years, or an equivalent smoking history)
  • Have not had a CT scan of the chest in the past 12 months for other medical reasons
  • Have a life expectancy of more than 10 years without major health conditions that would prevent treatment if cancer is detected

Referral pathways:

  • Screening for Life website: You can complete an online risk assessment and referral form on the Screening for Life program page. This tool helps calculate patient eligibility before submission, reducing the number of rejected referrals. Completed forms may also be faxed to 1.888.944.3388.
  • Self-referrals: Patients may refer themselves by filling out the self-referral form on the Screening for Life website or by calling 1.866.727.3926. A Registered Nurse will follow up to review information and determine eligibility. Importantly, you will still receive updates and results even if your patients self-refer.
  • EMR referrals: The Tammemagi Lung Cancer Risk Calculator is now embedded in select EMR systems, including Ava, Med Access, PS Suite, and HealthQuest.
