Respiratory therapists and occupational therapists were recently incorporated directly into Alberta Healthy Living Program (AHLP) exercise classes.
They help ensure safe, effective, and adaptable exercise for a broad range of individuals and conditions who you refer to AHLP.
How respiratory therapists support participants:
- Monitor breathing and respond to symptoms in real time to enhance safety
- Teach breathing and pacing strategies to manage shortness of breath with exercise
- Modify exercises for chronic lung conditions; develop respiratory care plans when needed
- Support early recognition and management of flare-ups/infections
- Reinforce appropriate use of inhalers and oxygen (as applicable)
- Provide education and self-management support for asthma, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, and other lung diseases
How occupational therapists support participants:
- Consider the psychosocial and environmental factors that affect participation and patient experiences.
- Link exercise to functional goals and valued activities to improve engagement and outcomes for the patient
- Provide patient-centred strategies to support participation (e.g., sensory/cognitive concerns, upper-extremity limitations)
- Teach posture and joint protection strategies that apply to daily routines; support balance/falls prevention
- Provide education and modifications for chronic pain, long COVID, and fibromyalgia.
- Support energy management (pacing/task adaptation) for energy-limiting conditions to help reduce “flares”
